Biography

Dr. Janak Jhankar Narzay, b.1948, at Kokrajhar of Assam; an Indian sculptor of international repute; retired Professor, and Principal of Kala Bhavan Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan; Indian Agent of Association of International Events of Monumental Sculpture AIESM, Italy; President of Santiniketan Kala Bhavan Praktoni (Association of Kala Bhavan Alumni). Dr. Narzary is credited with four international awards (i) India-Triennale International award, LKA, NewDelhi; (ii). Han Culture Dreams of China award, Beijing: (iii). Zainul Abedin International award, Dhaka, (iv). International award of ISSA, China; recipient of one National award, and ten other national level awards and honors from India including Bishnu Prasad Rabha and Bhupen Hazarika award; Maha Shilpi Samman, Department of culture, West Bengal Government, and more. Dr. Narzary is recipient of (i) National Cultural Scholarship, (ii) JRF, UGC, (iii) Fulbright Scholarship of IIE (USA); has degrees of BA, BFA, MFA in sculpture and PG in art history from Boston University, USA; PhD from Visva Bharati. Dr. Narzary is an experimentalist, departed from conventional practice of modern Indian sculptors and paved a new trend of contemporary Indian sculpture. He has worked and installed open air monumental creative sculptures in more than 24 cities of fifteen countries of the world on invitation. He is an educationist associated with many other universities acting as member of academic boards, institute boards, also acted as member of selection committee of VC, Bodoland University. His research papers on art and culture, one act plays and poems are published in various noted journals.
